With the cold weather there is a possibility of water lines freezing up. To help prevent freeze-ups, we recommend taking any of the following precautionary actions:
• Use water throughout the day
• Flush toilets on a regular basis
• Check the temperature of the water as close to where it enters the house as possible. If the temperature is close to freezing, run a substantial amount of water until the temperature increases. (washing laundry or showering can put the extra water to good use.)
• Keep a faucet trickling. If you keep a faucet trickling, it is advised to periodically turn the flow of water up to about a garden hose stream for several minutes. This will help heat up the water to keep it from freezing and also help prevent the sewer line from freezing (trickling water can cause the sewer line to freeze up).
Property owners are responsible for their own water and sewer lines beginning from the city’s main water and sewer lines. This includes repairing and thawing the lines.
